Ika's First Book Signing

Author Peggy Mullins and Ika
First Book Signing

On July 14 The Fauquier Bank (in Warrenton, Virginia) hosted an Adoption Day for the Fauquier SPCA. The weather was perfect. The dogs were well behaved. The turnout was great and I had my first book signing. It was a perfect way to spend a Saturday with dogs and books. Ika attended also and was dressed in the same outfit he wore for the cover of his book. He stole the show! A portion of the sales from his book I donated to the SPCA for the care of the cats and dogs.
Here are some of the canine attendees who are all looking for a forever home. All the dogs were delightful and extremely friendly.  There are lovely cats who need homes too.
Some of the programs and services the SPCA offers are: Adoption of Animals, Lost and Found Assistance, Tag Identification, Rabies Clinics, Pet Hotline, Pet Therapy, Behavior Training and Assistance, Low Cost Spay/Neuter Clinics, Humane Education, Cruelty Prevention & Intervention and Disaster Emergency Assistance.
If you are interested in adopting and cat or dog you may contact the Fauquier SPCA at: 540-788-9000; email: fspca@fauquierspca.com; Website: www.fauquierspca.org.
As the SPCA says: Put a little love in your life – Adopt a Shelter Pet!

"Everybody Loves Ika: One Woman's Memoir Of Her Dog, An American Pit Bull Terrior"

May 25, 2012  by Cedar Knoll Press

Abandoned carelessly by her birth mother, Peggy Mullins grew up in a hellish adoptive home with distant, abusive parents who found every opportunity to damp out the tiny glimmers of happiness she managed to cling to in such a cold environment. After surviving two disastrous marriages, struggling to finally earn her degree in psychology, and starting her own marketing business, Peggy found herself emotionally devastated.

Ika, a beautiful Pit Bull Terrier pup, was spared at the last moment from being born into a similarly hellish life—one where dogs were viciously abused for pleasure, sport, and profit. Though his mother and many of his siblings didn’t make it out of their gruesome home alive, Ika survived thanks to the skilled and compassionate work of a quick-thinking vet and a few big-hearted volunteers.

In time, Ika found his way to Peggy, who would give him a loving, permanent home in which he would thrive. In return, Ika would teach Peggy the kindness, patience, and unconditional love that had long been absent from her life. In addition to Ika, she acquires several horses, all with their own unique and entertaining personalities that she details warmly in these pages. Along with the surprising affection of a special man and a spectacular family of animals, Peggy’s book poignantly guides readers through her difficult journey toward healing and peace.

Ika And The CIA Disguise

Who me? CIA? Not on your life!

The Innocent Bride Disguise

Living so close to the D.C. area, the CIA often recruits locals as spies. Ika, being the least likely to be caught as a spy, often helps out. It is a very dangerous job and great caution must be taken to conceal the operatives true identity. Tricky disguises are employed often. Here he is in one of his finest. And while most spies carry a weapon Ika has no means to do so. A holster and gun strapped around his shoulder would surely be noticed! This makes his job even more dangerous. Yet there are other means of protecting himself or apprehending a foreign intelligence officer. In these pictures he is spying on the groom...better watch out buddy, he'll lick you to death if he catches you!

Did you see what that guy was up to?

Everybody Loves Ika, But Dazzle The Mare! The Horse With A Sense Of Humor.

Dazzle, "Do You See Me Now?"
Dazzle is our paint mare.Quite the character and has a sense of humor! Once while we were cleaning manure from the paddocks she grabbed the handle of the manure bucket off the ground with her teeth and dragged it over to us. If you ignore her she will put her very large head over your shoulder. If you continue to ignore her she places her eye right next to yours as if to say "Do you see me now?"
While everybody who has ever met Ika loves him, she is the only thing in Ika's life that would not.
Read about how she came into this world and almost didn't make it and how one incident between Ika and Dazzle would set the tone for their relationship.
Follow Ika's blog and be the first to buy the book. Soon to be released!

The Horses, Ika's Friends, Author Peggy Mullins Shares A Few Words

Tauri in Winter

"Tauri, an Arabian gelding, was my first horse. When I got him he was very untrusting of people having had some bad experiences with bad people. He was as untrusting as I was since I had a less then desirable upbringing with abusive adoptive parents. Through our experiences together, Tauri and I learned to get past our mistrust."
Billy
"Billy, an Arabian gelding, came to me although I was very hesitant to take him. He had many issues including a fear of confined places, horse trailers and things brushing against his legs. His fear lead to very dangerous behavior from this thousand pound horse. He was also not trained. Through many hours of working together he learned to overcome his fears and gain confidence in himself. Read more about this sweet horse in my book

IKA

Pit Bull Dogs have a poor reputation which is flamed by the media. In fact, they are a devoted and loving breed of dog whose only desire in life is to please their people and be a loved part of a family.
In the 1940’s the common family pet was the American Pit Bull. Even the dog that appeared on the television series The Little Rascals was a Pit Bull Dog. Today, however, they are regarded by many as vicious by nature.
Everybody Loves Ika is a true story about my own Pit Bull. It is intended to educate people about the horrors of dog fighting and the loving nature of this breed as it strolls through the happenings in his life.  The book is my own story too. It shows how this dog helped heal me through his loving nature.
